I have been involved with one form of art or another for most of my life. I’ve been a painter, weaver, oriental rug restorer, photographer and now a felt maker. To me they are all interconnected and are all part of one big great creative warehouse where I can go to find inspiration when working on a piece of art.

After many years as a fine art photographer using digital media I had a strong desire to be away from the computer for my creative work and back to making something tactile with my hands. I learned about felting mostly from books and the internet (blogs and YouTube videos) where a wealth of information can be found due to the generosity of people who are willing to share their work and technical information.  I did take a class from Jean Gauger at New England Felting Supply who was an engaging and knowledgeable teacher and I look forward to taking more workshops and classes in the future to keep developing and expanding my skills. It seems there is no end to what can be learned about felt and felt making. I am constantly inspired by the work of others and the many ways that wool, soap and water can be used to make just about anything!

Nuno felting is of particular interest to me. I love to see what happens when the different colors of wool combine with the textures and colors of various kinds of silk.  Being able to create a fabric that is light and airy but has the body and warmth of wool is endlessly rewarding. The summer before last I took a shibori workshop with Joan Morris at Pro Chemical and Dye. It was an excellent class where I learned a number of techniques that I hope to combine with my felt making. I’m happy to say that I am beginning this month to rent a small studio for dyeing that will make more experimentation possible!

I have a degree in Arts and Crafts and their History from the University of California at Santa Cruz and have taken numerous art classes at Massachusetts College of Art, The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston  and The New England School of Photography.
